A Summer for Roadrunners
August 30th, 2009
Two weekends past, my wife and I stopped by the Block Creek Natural Area near Fredericksburg, Texas to check out the facilities and landscapes for our Fall Foliage Photo Tour. The accommodations were pleasant and comfortable, furnished with pretty antiques and ranch style furniture. I’m confident our photographers will enjoy the food as well, right down to the chocolate chip cookies.
The ranch looks great, but we are hoping for some rain in September and October to put things in peak condition. The belted kingfisher arrived at Larry and Sharron Jay’s pond the morning after we arrived. There is a good chance one will be fishing there when we go back. Lots of birds (black-chinned hummingbirds, lesser goldfinches, cardinals, Carolina wrens, wild turkey and others) were at the photo blinds and feeders. The species composition will change a little by November, but I expect the numbers and diversity will be quite satisfactory.
Please hurry to sign up for this one by the last of September. There are three spaces available. We need to have this tour filled by October to guarantee our reservation to photograph the Natural Area in November.
From Block Creek Natural Area, we moved on to Wichita Falls, Fort Worth, Uvalde and home. That part of the trip was personal business, but I did work a few dragonflies in north Texas. We’ve been home a week.
