Zilker Botanical Garden — located on 30 acres in Austin, Texas has often been called “the jewel in the heart of Austin”. Theme gardens such as rose, herb and Japanese garden are interconnected with streams, waterfalls and Koi-filled ponds. The Hartman Prehistoric Garden recreates local dinosaur habitat. This garden is a unique collaboration between The City of Austin Parks & Recreation Department (PARD) and the Austin Area Garden Council (AAGC). The garden is free and open to the public most days year-round and is enjoyed by over 400,000 visitors each year, including thousands of school children from Austin and the surrounding communities. Well I havent been out much taking photos do to the nice Texas heat. But over the last week of June and some of July I have been going down to Zilker park to take photo’s. While there is not much down there to photo this time of year I have found some nice lilly pads to photo. I hope to go back soon and see what else I can get so I can post some more.
Golden-cheeked warblers nest only in central Texas mixed Ashe-juniper and oak woodlands in ravines and canyons. Warblers eat insects and spiders found on the leaves and bark of oaks and other trees. They use long strips of cedar bark and spider webs to build their nests. They come to Texas in March to nest and raise their young, and leave in July to spend the winter in Mexico and Central America. Females lay 3-4 eggs during nesting season. Of the nearly 360 bird species that breed in Texas, the Golden-cheeked Warbler is the only one that nests exclusively in Texas. Golden-cheeked warblers are endangered because many tall juniper and oak woodlands have been cleared to build houses, roads, and stores. Some habitat was cleared to grow crops or grass for livestock. Other habitat areas were flooded when large lakes were built. I was just lucky enough to see one and get a photo of it. Number of View :1174

Well sometime back I took off a few days at work to go take some wood duck photos. The place for you to go and to get close to them is at Landa Park in New Braunfels. The wood duck is one of only a few north american ducks that nest in trees. Many people consider it to be the most beautiful of all waterfowl. I you would like to see these I suggest you go to this park, and now is the time to do it.
Well I hope everybody had a good new year. This is my first post to the Lodge for 2010. I have to say if i got these photo’s the first of the year who knows what the rest will be like. lol. I took these photo’s in Llano. I was invited by some other photographer buddies. The lady who manages these bird’s is from out of state and goes to state parks to give talks about them. The owl is 27 years old and the cara-cara is 34 years old. They are well taken care of. When I first saw the lady pull up, the owl was sitting on the seat not in a cage and loose in the van. I was shocked. SOAR Inc. (Save Our American Raptors) is an organization dedicated to educating the public to the issues surrounding North America’s Birds of Prey. S.O.A.R operates on the private donations which help defray the cost of providing educational programs as well as the upkeep of Doris’ birds. Well I hope ya’ll enjoy and have a safe new year. May it be better than last year. Justin Number of View :263

Well I have to say I am having fun with my new camera gear. These three photos are taken with my new Nikon D300s and a 70-200 2.8 lens. I dont know if this is the same hawk that comes back every year but it is of the same kind. When I am outside at work, this guy could care less if I am close to him and I do mean close. I have gotten within 3 feet of him. The first photo was taken in the barn which I was going in there for an unknown reason (LOL). In the 2nd photo I was about 15 feet or so from him standing on some pipe and the last one was taken on Friday morning on top of some steel. One thing cool about him is that the flash doesn’t bother him. Enjoy. JJ http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/sharp-shinned_hawk/id Number of View :342
